Why it matters

A stopped watch is a small job every time you wear it.

Perpetual calendars, annual calendars and moon phases are worse: reset them by hand and you are working through a manual, carefully, on a watch you would rather not be handling at all.

01

Ready to wear

Time and date correct, mainspring wound. You take the watch off the rotor and put it on.

02

Kinder to complications

A calendar that is never reset is a calendar whose date change is never forced at the wrong hour.

03

Oil stays where it should

Movement keeps lubricants distributed rather than settled. It does not replace a service; it does mean the watch is not sitting still for a year.

How a winder works

Three settings, and that is the whole of it.

Swipe the cards →

  1. Turns per day

How many full rotations the cradle makes in twenty-four hours. Most modern automatics want somewhere between 650 and 900. Under-winding stops the watch; over-winding is absorbed by the mainspring clutch on almost every modern calibre.

    650–900 TPD on most calibres
  2. Direction

Clockwise, anticlockwise, or alternating. Some movements only wind one way, so bi-directional is the safe choice when you are not sure which yours is.

    Bi-directional when in doubt
  3. Rest

Good winders turn for a few minutes and then stop for the rest of the hour. That is deliberate — the watch reaches full wind and then idles, exactly as it would on a wrist between movements.

    Minutes of turning, then still
